Back

Travel was my way into editorial. In 2012, I went to the Scottish Highlands and wrote an article about the trip that I sent to The Independent’s travel editor. They ran it, commenting that it was ‘a treat to publish’.

In terms of specialisms, I’ve covered a fair bit of Central America as an author, and headed editorial teams and strategies for the APAC and EMEA regions.

I’ve also done a lot of luxury travel work. As a writer, I’ve produced luxury travel stories featuring Aman (for Culture Trip), Elegant Resorts and Cenizaro (for The Sunday Times Travel). As a strategist for Marriott, I work within the elevated TOV that marks out their six luxury brands: EDITION, The Ritz-Carlton, The Luxury Collection, St. Regis, W Hotels and JW Marriott. Some of the work below – e.g. the cruises, which were with Lindblad – comes into the luxury category.

Rough Guides

Loads of stuff, both as a freelance writer and in-house editor. Rough Guides was my dream gig and I got my first opportunity with them in 2007, when they packed me off to Panama.

Dorling Kindersley (DK) Travel

My most recent bit of travel work saw me updating one of DK’s big sellers: Top 10 London.

Marriott

I commission, edit and occasionally write articles for Marriott’s website. I wrote this one, based on a collaboration between influencer Emma Winder and W Hotels.

Wallpaper*

I authored the first editions of the Wallpaper* City Guides to Liverpool and Manchester. My architectural knowledge really ‘topped out’ on these projects 😀

Culture Trip

As an editorial director, I oversaw the production at scale of high-quality travel stories covering destinations across the APAC region. The business was navigating an intense scaleup period and the role involved much liaison with engineering, product, commercial and SEO teams.

The Independent

I’ve written Iong-form features on Bolivia, Scotland and Crete. I always look for fresh angles and the Crete article, for instance, dives into the don’t-mess-with-us culture of the island’s highlands.

The Sunday Times Travel Magazine

Long-form features on Mauritius and Dubai: an anti-honeymoon piece and a glitz-free piece.

The Telegraph

Long-form features on Iceland, Hamburg and the Galápagos, in which I focus on the islands’ human history. During the pandemic, I also did pieces on trying to feel a sense of wonder without travel – my editor picked it out as one of his favourite pieces that year – and walking London’s Capital Ring.
